Green School

St. Ciaran's has been awarded the Green School flag for the theme of litter and waste. This involved following the 7 steps set out by Green Schools

We conducted an extensive environmental review, encompassing surveys, litter monitoring, and identification of litter hotspots on the school grounds. Additionally, we closely monitored our rubbish collection process.

As a result of our environmental review over the past year and a half, several initiatives were implemented. Two new water fountains were installed, and complimentary reusable water bottles were distributed to students, leading to the avoidance of over 30,000 single-use plastic bottles. Furthermore, daily litter picking sessions, organized by members of the Green Schools committee, significantly enhanced the cleanliness of our school campus.

Within classrooms, recycling bins were introduced, each accompanied by informative posters detailing the appropriate items for disposal. To inform the students and staff, tutorial lessons were developed to highlight the commendable efforts of the Green Schools Committee. Additionally, a first-year green school’s poster competition, focused on the theme of litter and waste, was conducted. Moreover, committee members established a Green Schools notice board to continually remind the school community of practical ways to reduce litter and waste, as well as informing them of the progress we made.

The diligent work of our committee yielded substantial results. Recycling within the school increased by 37% over the past year, while landfill waste was reduced by 29%.

Since then, we have shifted our focus to the theme of Water. The committee has initiated a review of water usage within the school, with ongoing efforts to identify areas for improvement.
